Why I lift.
I started lifting when I was 10. I still do it, and I really don't want to stop.
How it started
I was 10. I wanted to get stronger and be better at sports. I started at summer camp, and later I got a personal trainer in Toronto.
My gym
I have a full home gym now. We bought a power cage with a double cable machine built in. It's very, very good. I love it.
Why I keep doing it
For me, lifting is just an easy way to relax. It gets my mind off work.
When I'm lifting, I'm not thinking about my code or my projects. But sometimes I finish a workout and suddenly I can see how to fix something I was stuck on.
I don't have any scientific papers to back that up. It's just what I notice.
The skip week effect
This one is real. If I skip a week, I really feel weaker. And it starts to compound. Then I skip the next week, and it's a very slippery slope.
What I can't do yet
I can almost do a full muscle-up. I can't do a handstand push-up yet, unfortunately.
Those are the goals. I'm trying to move into calisthenics.
Lifting and building
I'm not saying lifting makes you a better coder. I'm saying that for me, a break from the screen makes the work better.
When I'm staring at a problem, I'm forcing it. When I'm in the gym, I'm not. And somehow the problem still gets easier.
I started lifting to get stronger. I keep doing it because it helps everything else.
